Moscow, Russia – After fleeing Syria in December 2014 and the collapse of his regime, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family are living a “quiet and luxurious” life in the Russian capital, Moscow. He has chosen to focus on rehabilitating his career as an ophthalmologist, according to a report in the British newspaper The Guardian.
Al-Assad, who previously trained in ophthalmology in London, is spending his time honing his medical skills in this specialty. He is also studying Russian, preparing for potential career opportunities within the Russian elite.
A luxurious lifestyle and immense wealth
Assad and his family live in upscale Moscow neighborhoods, specifically in the Rublyovka district, or in luxury apartments within the “Moscow City” complex, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.
Sources indicate that the family has no financial need to work. They transferred a substantial fortune, estimated at around $250 million in cash, to Russia between 2018 and 2019. In addition, they own approximately 20 luxury apartments.
The family lives under tight Russian protection and in relative isolation from political circles. Strict restrictions have been imposed on Assad to prevent him from making public appearances or engaging in any political activity.
On the family front, the report indicated that Assad’s children are settling into life among Moscow’s elite. Meanwhile, his wife, Asma al-Assad, has recovered from leukemia after receiving treatment in Russia.
