Jakarta, Indonesia – A massive fire broke out in a seven-story residential building in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon. The blaze resulted in the deaths of 17 people and left others with varying degrees of injury, according to local police speaking to Kompas TV.
Authorities confirmed that firefighters brought the blaze under control hours after it broke out. Many residents were evacuated using emergency ladders.
The incident comes at a time when the city is experiencing an increase in fires in old buildings due to weak electricity networks and high population density.
