Cotonou, Benin – The army in Benin announced Sunday that it had regained control of the situation after a surprise coup attempt. The attempt aimed to overthrow President Patrice Talon. Sources close to President Talon confirmed to AFP that he was safe. Meanwhile, soldiers had taken control of government buildings and official headquarters in the capital, Cotonou.
Sources said that “the situation is under control and the army is securing the capital and vital facilities.” No confirmed reports of civilian casualties have been received so far. They added that authorities are taking precautionary measures to prevent any escalation. This comes amid a heavy security presence in the streets of Cotonou.
Initial reports indicated that the attempted coup stemmed from escalating political tensions in recent weeks. Officials urged citizens to remain calm and avoid main roads until the situation stabilized.
This development comes after weeks of political and economic protests in the country. It reflects growing concern, both domestically and internationally, about the future stability of Benin.
