Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – About 20 people died in a tragic accident after a boat carrying passengers capsized in the waters of Lake Mai-Ndombe in western Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to local authorities, the boat had set out on
a routine trip before navigational conditions suddenly deteriorated.
This led to him sinking to the bottom of the lake amidst limited rescue attempts,
hampered by the difficulty of access and bad weather conditions.
Search teams are continuing their sweeps to find additional missing persons
amid fears that the death toll could rise.
Meanwhile, the relevant authorities have opened an investigation
to uncover the causes of the May Ndombe Lake accident and determine responsibilities.
This is in a country where lakes and the Congo River frequently
experience similar accidents due to technical malfunctions, overcrowding, and weak safety measures.
