Rome, Italy – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni participated in a video conference meeting of the Coalition of the Willing alliance,
with the participation of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The meeting focused on the latest developments in the negotiation process related
to the war in Ukraine and the path to achieving a sustainable peace.
According to a statement issued by Chigi Palace, Meloni expressed her appreciation
for the negotiating process that began in Geneva at the initiative of the United States.
She stressed the importance of maintaining the cohesion of international efforts
in supporting the path towards a “just and lasting” peace in Ukraine.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to develop strong
joint security guarantees between the two sides
of the Atlantic that would ensure the stability of the region
and prevent a return to military escalation.
The process of achieving peace
Meloni concluded her remarks by expressing her hope that “Russia
will seize this new opportunity to contribute constructively to the peace process.”
This is in reference to international anticipation regarding Moscow’s stance on the initiative
In a related development, the last few hours have witnessed
a notable focus from European media, especially French media,
This depends on the identity of the entity that drafted
the terms of the proposed American plan.
Amid conflicting explanations from the US administration,
questions have been raised about the degree of consistency within the US position.
Ukraine’s interests
European analysts believe that the American plan appears,
according to what seems to be a media consensus,
It is closer to enshrining Russian ambitions
than to guaranteeing the minimum interests of Ukraine.
In addition to reducing the size of its armed forces,
it also refused to allow the deployment of any NATO
or European forces within Ukrainian territory.
This is to ensure that Moscow is prevented from resuming attacks
after a ceasefire or after a peace agreement is reached.
While discussions continue among Western powers,
the future of the plan remains open to further debate.
This comes amid serious questions about its ability to strike
a balance between European security and Ukrainian demands.
Between Russian ambitions and the requirements of regional stability.
