Cairo, Egypt – Egypt’s National Elections Authority held a press conference on Monday to present the latest developments regarding the results of the first phase of the House of Representatives elections.
Which has not been officially announced yet, amid controversy
over allegations of irregularities in some circles.
Counselor Hazem Badawi, head of the National Elections Authority,
said that the authority “will not tolerate”
This applies to dealing with any violations
that were detected during the electoral process.
He emphasized: “We will take all necessary legal measures regarding the violations.”
Even if it leads to a complete re-election
or just a re-election in some districts.
Badawi stressed that the commission is committed
to ensuring a genuine popular will.
He added: “No one will enter parliament except through the actual choice of the voters.”
Sisi demands a full investigation
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi issued a statement earlier today,
in which he expressed his close monitoring of the violations.
Which occurred in some committees that witnessed competition
between individual candidates.
The president said in his statement: “I have received reports
of events that occurred in some districts,
It is subject to review by the National Elections Authority,
as the competent and independent body.
President’s demands
Sisi called on the authority to thoroughly examine the appeals and the events under review.
And making decisions that “please God and reveal the true will of the voters,”
Emphasis must be placed on ensuring that candidates’ representatives
receive official copies of the vote tally sheets in the subcommittees.
The president added that the authority should not hesitate to take
whatever measures are necessary, “whether by cancelling the first phase entirely,
Or to cancel it partially in certain districts,” provided that the elections
are repeated on dates to be determined later by the commission.
Measures against election campaign violations
Sisi also asked the commission to clearly announce the measures
taken regarding the election campaign violations that came to its attention.
In order to achieve effective oversight and ensure that everyone
is not reminded of these violations in future stages.
These developments come amid growing talk of violations
that occurred during the first phase in some hotspots.
This prompted the National Authority to refrain from
announcing the results until the appeals process is completed.
The official statements also come within the framework of the state’s
emphasis on the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
And to ensure parliamentary representation that reflects the popular will without interference.
