Cyprus, Greece – The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement today marking the 42nd anniversary of the illegal declaration of the self-proclaimed state of Northern Cyprus. This declaration was made on November 15, 1983.
The ministry asserted in its statement that the declaration is “illegal, null and void, and condemned under UN Security Council Resolutions 541/1983 and 550/1984.” It also violates the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international law.
Greece called on all states to “resist any form of modification and to fully respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus. This comes in the face of the breakaway entity.”
The Ministry emphasized its continued support for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus conflict. This solution would be based on a bi-zonal and bicultural union with a single international personality, sovereignty, and citizenship, in accordance with the framework established by United Nations resolutions.
The statement noted that “recent diplomatic activity, including the appointment of a personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Cyprus issue, as well as informal meetings in an expanded format, represents important steps towards the resumption of talks between the two sides.”
