Washington, DC – The American news website Axios revealed that Israel has begun negotiations with the United States to sign a new long-term security agreement. This agreement aims to secure at least $4 billion in military aid annually for 20 years, thus guaranteeing continued US support until 2048.
This move, spearheaded by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, comes ahead of the expiration of the current $38 billion, 10-year memorandum of understanding, which is set to end in 2028. This is despite growing tensions with the pro-Trump movement known as “Make America Great Again” (MAGA).
Negotiations and adherence to the “America First” policy
According to sources, Israel is seeking to add provisions aligned with the “America First” policy to gain the support of the Trump administration. This is despite frustration among some of Magna’s base regarding foreign aid. Furthermore, US military aid to Israel saw a significant increase during the Gaza war with a multi-billion dollar emergency package.
During his meeting with Netanyahu last April, Trump confirmed that the United States provides Israel with $4 billion annually, describing the amount as “significant” and praising Israel for its military cooperation.
Israeli proposals to extend the deal and change the form of aid
Sources reported that negotiations were delayed due to the Gaza war but have recently resumed. The Israeli side has proposed two main ideas: extending the agreement from 10 to 20 years. Its aim is to ensure the continuation of aid until Israel’s centennial in 2048.
The proposal also included changing the form of aid. Part of the funds would be used for joint US-Israeli research and development, including in areas such as defense technology, defense artificial intelligence, and the “Golden Dome” project, instead of direct military aid.
Political challenges
Approving the deal faces political challenges due to opposition from the MAGA movement to foreign aid, as well as partisan concerns in the United States regarding Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
