Moscow, Russia – In a move reflecting escalating tensions between Moscow and Tokyo, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced an entry ban on 30 Japanese citizens. The list includes government officials and public figures. This came in response to what it described as “unfriendly actions” taken by Japan against Russia recently.
The Russian Foreign Ministry explained in its statement that the decision was a result of “the hostile policies pursued by the Japanese government. Japan also participates in Western sanctions imposed on Moscow.” It noted that the move was based on the principle of reciprocity.
The statement added that the list of those banned includes prominent Japanese political and media figures. According to Moscow, these individuals contributed to spreading “anti-Russian” positions or supported the economic sanctions imposed on Russia since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis.
Russia affirmed that the doors to dialogue with Japan remain open. However, it stressed the need to respect Russian interests and cease what it described as an “unjustified hostile approach.” It should be noted that Moscow will take further steps if Tokyo continues its current policies.
Relations between the two countries have been increasingly strained since the start of the war in Ukraine. This comes after Japan joined Western sanctions and suspended several economic cooperation projects with Russia. Moscow considers these moves a complete alignment with the West.
