Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian sources say that approximately 70 percent of the munitions used by Russia in its war against Ukraine originated in North Korea. This is an indication of expanding military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
According to an analysis by Ukrainian authorities based on classified documents, North Korea has sent approximately 6.5 million shells of various calibers to Russia since the start of the war. In return, it received Russian military technology, including air defense systems and technology for its space program, as well as financial aid estimated at around $20 billion.
The documents, reviewed by Japan’s Kyodo News Agency, indicate that Moscow transferred nuclear technology to Pyongyang. This reflects the strengthening of military ties between the two countries in the face of Western pressure and international sanctions.
In a related development, Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia obtains Japanese, American, and European-made electronic components from China. These components are used in the production of tanks and missiles. It is estimated that approximately 90% of the semiconductors used in the Russian defense industry come from China. In return, Russia receives oil, rare earth minerals, and dual-use materials from Moscow.
Reports also indicate that Iran supplied Russia with approximately 2,200 drones and explosives technology. In return, it received Russian air defense systems and radars.
A Ukrainian defense official asserted that the logistical network linking North Korea, China, and Iran is contributing to the prolongation of the war in Ukraine. He called for stricter Western sanctions against Moscow and its allies to prevent the continued flow of military supplies.
