Europe – Politico reported that the European Union has decided to tighten visa rules and procedures for Russian citizens. This move reflects the ongoing tension between the two sides over the war in Ukraine.

The magazine explained that the European Commission is working on adopting stricter controls. These controls include extensive background checks on Russian applicants, as well as shortening the duration of visas granted and requiring applicants to provide additional documentation proving the purpose of their visit.

Politico quoted diplomatic sources as saying the aim of the decision is to curb the “dual use of visas.” These visas could allow Russian citizens to travel for purposes that do not comply with European regulations. The magazine noted that some member states have called for a near-total ban on tourist visas.

This tightening comes amid continued Western sanctions against Moscow. Disagreements have grown within the EU regarding how to deal with Russian citizens. Some advocate for complete isolation, while others believe it is necessary to distinguish between the people and the ruling regime.

Observers believe that this new European move could deepen Moscow’s diplomatic and public isolation. It may also further complicate relations between Russia and the European Union in the coming period.
