The Polisario Front, which seeks independence for Western Sahara, claimed responsibility for an attack targeting Moroccan military positions in the Mahbes region.
This move was described as a message of defiance to the United Nations
after its recent indication of support for Morocco’s autonomy plan.
The news agency affiliated with what is known as the “Sahrawi Republic”
reported that the Polisario Front forces shelled positions and trenches of the Moroccan army.
This occurred on November 4th in the Mahbas area near the security wall,
without mentioning the extent of the losses or any injuries.
There was no immediate official comment from Moroccan authorities,
and the attack could not be independently verified.
End the ongoing conflict
This development is the first of its kind since the UN Security Council adopted
a resolution last week affirming that Morocco’s plan,
Which stipulates granting Western Sahara autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty,
It represents “the most realistic and viable solution” to end the conflict
that has lasted for nearly half a century.
The Western Sahara, which is larger than the United Kingdom, is a mineral-rich region.
And a strategic location on the Atlantic coast.
It has remained a subject of intense dispute since the withdrawal of colonial Spain in 1975.
While both the United States and France support the Moroccan position,
This contributed to stimulating investment and development
in the southern regions of the Kingdom.
The Moroccan initiative is the realistic solution
The Polisario Front, which is backed by Algeria, accuses the United Nations of “bias towards Morocco”.
It affirms its determination to continue fighting to expel what
it describes as the “occupation” and achieve “full sovereignty” over the territory.
In contrast, Rabat insists that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is the only realistic solution.
To end the conflict and ensure security and stability in the region.
It is worth noting that the United Nations has been running a peacekeeping mission
in Western Sahara for decades, tasked with organizing a referendum on self-determination.
However, this vote has not been implemented to this day.
Meanwhile, recent years have witnessed a gradual shift in
the positions of some countries in favor of the Moroccan proposal.
