Veteran Democratic politician Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, announced that she will not seek re-election in the next election.
This brought to an end a parliamentary career that spanned decades,
making her one of the most prominent figures in the history of contemporary American politics.
Pelosi said in a press statement that she will continue to support
the Democratic Party and participate in public life.
But she believes the time has come “to make way for a new generation of leaders.”
First woman to serve as Speaker of the US House of Representatives
She indicated that she would continue to serve her home state of California
until the end of her current term in Congress.
Pelosi, 84, is the first woman to serve as Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
She held the position twice, between 2007 and 2011.
Then from 2019 to 2023. And during her long years in political work,
She played a pivotal role in passing a number of major laws,
She was one of the most prominent opponents of Republican
Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump.
A symbol of female leadership
Her announcement sparked widespread reactions within American political and media circles.
Democrats described her as “a symbol of female leadership and political toughness.”
Republicans, however, saw her departure as representing
“the end of an era of sharp division in Congress.”
Pelosi’s decision is expected to open the door to
a heated election race within the Democratic Party.
This is to choose her successor in the district she represents in the city of San Francisco.
