Astana, Kazakhstan – US sources revealed to Axios that Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will announce, during his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump,
his country’s official accession to the “Abraham Accords”.
This move represents a new boost to the US-sponsored agreement to promote cooperation between Israel and the Arab and Muslim worlds.
Restores momentum to the Abraham Accords
A US official explained that the importance of the Kazakh decision lies
in the fact that it restores momentum to the Abraham Accords
after a period of political stagnation in the Middle East.
He noted that Kazakhstan and Israel have had diplomatic relations for more than three decades,
However, joining the American framework gives their cooperation a new strategic dimension.
This is in the areas of technology, energy, and regional security.
President Trump will reveal
US Special Envoy Steve Wittkopf had previously announced that President Trump
would reveal “a new country joining the Abraham Accords,” without naming it.
He confirmed that the announcement would be made at 6:30 PM Washington time.
This development comes as President Trump hosts leaders of
five Central Asian countries at the White House as part of the C5+1 platform.
Which includes the United States, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan,
This is with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the areas of economy, energy and security.
Expanding its influence in Central Asia
Through these meetings, Washington seeks to expand its influence in Central Asia.
It is a region witnessing escalating competition between the United States, Russia, and China.
Especially in light of the race for vital mineral resources and global supply chains.
During the meeting, the United States and Kazakhstan signed
a memorandum of understanding on basic metals.
This is a step that strengthens the partnership between the two countries
and opens the door to new opportunities in the fields of renewable energy and trade.
