Paris, France – The public prosecutor in the French city of Lyon revealed that the thieves who carried out an attack on a precious metals processing laboratory last week stole 306 kilograms of precious metals, Most of them are made of gold,
and their value is estimated at around 28 million euros.
This was after they detonated part of the building with explosive devices during the operation.
According to French security reports, as reported by AFP, the attack took place
at dawn on Thursday in the suburbs of Lyon.
The gang used explosives to break into the laboratory before fleeing in fast-moving vehicles.
No injuries were reported among the workers, but the material damage was extensive.
The prosecutor noted that investigations are still ongoing
with the participation of the organized crime unit and the French judicial police.
He stressed that the precision of the planning and method of execution
indicated a professional gang with prior experience in stealing precious metals and museums.
This incident brings to mind the major art thefts that France has witnessed in recent decades.
Chief among them was the theft of rare works of art from the Louvre Museum.
The perpetrators used similar methods of infiltration and planning.
This reinforces the hypothesis that the attack was carried out by
a network specializing in smuggling gold and valuables across Europe.
Observers believe that the rise in global gold prices has increased
the pace of these organized crimes in France.
As gangs have begun targeting industrial laboratories
and warehouses containing precious metals instead of banks,
This is due to its poor security compared to the large value of the contents.
