Tel Aviv, Israel – Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced Tuesday the appointment of retired judge Asher Kula to head the investigation into the leaked video from the Sde Teiman base. This comes in defiance of the opposition of State Attorney Gali Baharav-Meara.
The investigation focuses on former Military Advocate General, Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who is currently detained on charges of obstruction of justice and other offenses. Levin justified his decision by stating that the investigation requires “a government official with experience in criminal law, independent of the Attorney General, and enjoying broad public trust.” He indicated that Kula’s background and experience make him the most suitable candidate for the task.
Legal experts criticized the appointment, arguing that Levin’s move “distorts and undermines the investigation.” They suggested the real aim might be to pressure the Attorney General rather than to conduct an objective investigation. According to analysts, this move could lead to the case being referred to the Supreme Court to rule on the legality of the decision.
