Cairo, Egypt – Counselor Essam El-Din Farid won the position of Speaker of the Egyptian Senate for the second legislative term,
after receiving 299 valid votes out of 299.
This was decided by a secret ballot held during the opening session today, Saturday, October 18, 2025.
No competing candidate came forward, and Farid was declared the winner by acclamation.
He will assume the presidency of the session immediately after the results are announced,
in accordance with the provisions of the Council’s internal regulations.
An extensive judicial biography
The president-elect has a distinguished judicial record, having graduated from the Faculty of Law at Cairo University in 1973.
He began his career as a deputy public prosecutor before progressing through a number of senior judicial positions,
including presiding over primary courts and serving as an advisor at the Cairo Criminal Court.
He was also assigned to work in the Illicit Gains Authority,
and joined the Technical Office of the Public Prosecutor.
He was then seconded to the Kingdom of Bahrain as President of the Military Courts of Appeal,
before assuming the presidency of the Alexandria Court of Appeal and the Cairo Court of Appeal.
He then became a member of the Supreme Judicial Council.
Opening Session: Organized Procedures
The session was opened under the chairmanship of Representative Mohamed Abu Al-Ela,
in his capacity as the oldest member.
The members took the constitutional oath, and then the nomination process for the Council’s Bureau was opened.
No other candidate came forward for the presidency of the council,
so Farid was voted unanimously in a public session, officially declaring him the winner.
The first statement of the president-elect
Counselor Essam El-Din Farid said after announcing his victory: “I pledge to work with the spirit of one team.”
With the conscience of a judge, and with the sincerity of a judge who seeks nothing but to elevate the status of the nation.
This statement reflects a commitment to a participatory and disciplined approach,
which is expected to positively impact the performance of the Council and its specialized committees.
The Council is expected to continue its sessions to elect the two deputies, and then complete the formation of the specialized committees’ offices.
The sessions are expected to extend according to procedural requirements and the legislative agenda for the new session.
