PARIS, France – French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu urged parliament on Tuesday not to use the budget vote as a pretext to vote to dismiss his government.

“There is no longer any justification for a vote of no confidence in the government,” Lecornu said, according to Reuters.

In an attempt to avoid being ousted, he proposed suspending a controversial pension reform that would raise the retirement age to 64.

This came as he addressed lawmakers to outline his budget priorities,

This is in the hope of avoiding losing a vote of no confidence, which would plunge France further into political turmoil.

The French presidency announced, on Sunday evening, the new lineup of Sébastien Lecornu’s second government.

This comes after a turbulent political week that included the resignation of the previous government.
