Java, Indonesia – Authorities in Indonesia announced Thursday that 59 people are still trapped under the rubble of an Islamic school building that collapsed last Monday on the island of Java, one of the islands of the Indonesian archipelago.
The disaster of the collapse of the Al-Khazini Islamic boarding school in East Java has so far killed at least 5 people.
Abdul Mahari, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency, said that according to the latest statistics, “59 people are still trapped under the rubble.”
Reports indicated that most of those missing or trapped under the rubble were students between the ages of 12 and 17.
He added in a statement that it is likely that “some survivors of the accident did not report their whereabouts”.
An investigation was opened into the cause of the disaster.
Preliminary results indicate structural problems in the building, which does not meet building standards, according to experts.
