Washington, United States – The Washington Post reported disagreements among Pentagon officials over the new US defense strategy.
Some considered it “short-sighted and useless”.
The newspaper quoted people working on developing the strategy as saying: “They described a growing feeling of frustration with a plan that they see as narrow-minded and may be irrelevant, especially in light of the president’s very personal and sometimes contradictory approach to foreign policy”.
She added that the military believes that the new strategy focuses excessively on internal threats at the expense of global challenges.
They are also particularly concerned about narrowing the scope of competition with China to the Taiwan issue only.
This is at a time when Beijing, in their opinion, is undertaking a large-scale military modernization.
According to two informed sources, the new strategy’s rhetoric has a “more partisan” character and accuses former President Joe Biden’s administration of weakening the military.
Concerns about “restructuring”
The newspaper’s sources also pointed to concerns about the US Secretary of Defense’s plan to restructure the armed forces.
The cuts are expected to include “800 generals and admirals who oversee the US armed forces.”
She noted that the proportion of women among those dismissed so far is “disproportionately high”.
Which raises additional questions among critics of the new defense strategy.
It had previously been announced that the Secretary of Defense had ordered hundreds of senior military leaders to be urgently invited to a meeting in Virginia.
But he did not disclose the subject of the meeting.
