Tehran, Iran – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed that his country presented various proposals and held multiple meetings with the European Troika (France, Germany, and Britain) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York last week.
He said in statements on Tuesday that negotiations with the Americans had reached a complete dead end.
“Excessive demands”
However, he stressed that Iran “made efforts to reach a settlement, but it did not succeed due to Washington’s excessive demands and the cooperation of European countries with it”.
He also stressed that activating the “trigger mechanism” aims to push his country to make concessions, which he described as unreasonable or impossible.
In addition, Araqchi called on the Iranian people to deal with the political and strategic repercussions of the sanctions.
“The sanctions will have political and strategic impacts and we must confront them,” he said.
Last week, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described the American requests as unacceptable.
He said at the time, “They asked that we hand them all the enriched uranium in exchange for delaying the resumption of sanctions for 3 months.. This is ridiculous.”
He also stressed that if his country had to “choose between these illogical demands and the Snapback mechanism, it would choose the latter”.
try to delay
These statements came after a Russian-Chinese effort failed last Friday to postpone the re-imposition of international sanctions on Iran in the UN Security Council.
This came after only four countries voted in favor of it, paving the way for the “trigger mechanism”.
Meanwhile, Tehran threatened to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, with which it concluded a new agreement in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on September 9, in response to the re-imposition of UN sanctions on it.
It is noteworthy that meetings at the highest levels intensified last week, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Especially between French President Emmanuel Macron and his Iranian counterpart.
This was in an effort to reach a settlement on sanctions and conclude a new agreement, but to no avail.
The European Troika countries that launched the “trigger mechanism” path late last August called on Tehran to grant IAEA inspectors full access to all nuclear facilities.
It also stipulated the resumption of negotiations with Washington, as well as the adoption of a mechanism to ensure the security of the enriched uranium stockpile.
While Iran considered these conditions unfair and putting pressure on it, stressing that its nuclear program is peaceful.
