NEW YORK, United States – US President Donald Trump will address the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.
At a time when world leaders are trying hard to contain crises from Gaza to Ukraine.
They also doubt whether the United States, with its “America First” foreign policy, is still prepared to play a leadership role in global affairs.
Since taking office in January (January), Trump has turned US foreign policy upside down. He has reduced foreign aid, imposed tariffs on friendly and hostile countries alike, and established warmer, if not volatile, relations with Russia.
At the same time, he has sought to resolve some of the world’s most intractable conflicts. However, he has had only limited success to date.
About 150 heads of state or government are expected to address the UN General Assembly this week. This includes Trump, who will deliver his second speech after the opening of the session.
8 months into Trump’s term
Trump’s speech comes eight months into his second term, which was marked by sharp aid cuts.
It also raised humanitarian concerns and doubts about the future of the United Nations.
This prompted United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to try to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
While White House officials did not provide any indications about what Trump would say.
However, documents seen by Reuters indicated that the Trump administration intends to call this week for a sharp tightening of the noose on the right to asylum.
This is in an effort to roll back a post-World War II framework on humanitarian protection.
A US State Department spokesman said Trump’s more restrictive stance would include requiring asylum seekers to seek protection in the first country they enter. This applies rather than in a country of their choice.
Guterres and Trump are expected to hold an official meeting for the first time. This meeting will occur since Trump returned to office in January (January).
Trump describes the United Nations as having “tremendous potential” but says it must “get its act together.” Trump maintained the same cautious stance on multilateralism. This stance was a hallmark of his first term, which lasted from 2017 to 2021.
He also accused the international organization of not helping him try to mediate peace in various conflicts.
Calls for the establishment of a Palestinian state
The work of the General Assembly is being held as the second anniversary of the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas approaches on October 7 (October).
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address the General Assembly on Friday.
Dozens of world leaders met yesterday, Monday, to adopt the establishment of a Palestinian state.
In a historic diplomatic shift, it faces fierce resistance from Israel and its close ally, the United States.
The most extreme right-wing government in Israel since its establishment has declared that there will be no Palestinian state.
As it moves forward with its war against Hamas in Gaza since the attack launched by the armed movement on October 7 (October) 2023 on Israel. This attack killed about 1,200 people.
Israel faces global condemnation as a result of its military operations in Gaza. According to health authorities in the Strip, more than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will also deliver speeches before the General Assembly.
Trump and Zelensky are expected to meet on Tuesday.
