Darfur, Sudan – In a tragic accident, residents of a Sudanese village died due to a landslide. From this disaster, one person miraculously survived.
The Sudan Liberation Army movement announced in a statement, on Monday night, the killing of about 1,000 residents of the village of Tarsin in Jebel Marra in central Darfur, west of the country.
The statement of the movement that controls the area indicated that the village, located near a mountainous area, was subjected to a major landslide due to heavy rains. This led to the death of all its residents except one person.
The movement’s spokesman, Abdul Rahman Al-Nayer, said that local teams are trying to exhume the bodies. But it faces great difficulties as the entire village has become underground.
“A small number of bodies were removed,” Al-Nayer explained. The village was completely wiped out of existence. There are rescue operations, but they are limited in capabilities.
He added, “The area that was exposed to the disaster is remote and difficult to reach. Furthermore, lifting huge stones requires heavy machinery”.
According to local sources, residents of the villages surrounding the stricken village are living in a state of terror. There are expectations that it will be exposed to similar landslides.
Local residents appealed to the international community to take action. They asked to save what can be saved from villages threatened by the risk of landslides.
The collapsed Tarsin area is one of the most famous areas of Jebel Marra for citrus production. The area has been completely leveled to the ground.
