Expressing his hope for the day when peace and partnership will prevail between Israel and Iran after “liberation from tyranny”.

A message of hope for a shared future

At the start of the weekly cabinet meeting held on Sunday, Netanyahu said: “We all hope that the Iranian people will soon be freed from the yoke of tyranny.”

He added, in a forward-looking tone: “When that day comes, Israel and Iran will once again be faithful partners. They will build a future of prosperity and peace for both peoples.”

In his speech, the Israeli Prime Minister stressed the desire to end the existing state of hostility. He said: “We hope that the day will come when we live in peace with Iran.”

Context of the statements

These statements come at a time when Iran is experiencing a widespread wave of internal protests.

The Israeli leadership is careful to differentiate in its media discourse between “the ruling regime in Tehran” and “the Iranian people”.

This is an attempt to revive the legacy of the historical relations that brought the two sides together before 1979.

Observers believe that Netanyahu is trying, through these words, to present an alternative vision of the current reality.

Highlighting the economic and developmental benefits could result from a political transformation in Tehran. This transformation could lead to the normalization of relations in the region.
