Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Basil is not just an addition to food flavors, it is an herb rich in nutrients that boost immunity.
It also protects against cancer and heart disease.
Basil has been used for thousands of years as an essential ingredient in Italian salads and recipes. It was also used in mummification rituals in ancient Egypt.
“Basil, especially its dried leaves, is a rich source of vitamin K,” registered dietitian Gillian Klubertson told the nonprofit Cleveland Clinic.
It is also known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, it may boost your mental health depending on the type and way you use it.
Basil leaves, such as sweet, gnovis, violet, and sacred basil, are a rich source of antioxidants.
Vitamins and Minerals
A report by the British newspaper “The Independent” stated that antioxidant vitamins and minerals prevent cell damage. They also reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
“There is growing evidence that basil is a powerful tool for cancer prevention,” Kloperson said.
But researchers need to conduct more studies on humans to confirm the results and know how much basil to consume.
In a previous study, researchers found that sweet basil inhibits the growth of human colon cancer cells. Additionally, six types of basil have anti-cancer properties.
As for cancer patients, researchers have found that some basil compounds can enhance the health of the immune system.
Many studies have indicated that basil reduces high blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and manages blood sugar levels.
The researchers did not specify the servings that must be eaten to obtain the health benefits of basil.
However, it can be taken either through basil extract tablets, or by adding fresh or dried leaves to meals.
But experts have warned that excessive consumption of basil, or taking it with some medications, may increase blood fluidity excessively.
It can also lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure excessively.
