Madrid, Spain – Spaniard Igor Arrieta, from the Emirates XRG cycling team, won second place in the third stage of the 2026 Itzulia Basque Country Race. Which was organized on Wednesday, after a strong and distinguished performance in one of the most exciting stages of the race.
Arrieta came in second place behind Frenchman Axel Lawrence, a cyclist for the Ineos Grenadiers. Who sealed the victory in the final meters of a decisive upward finish, while Eritrean Nathanael Tsvasion came third.

The stage has witnessed strong competition since its launch. Arrieta succeeded in being part of the main escape group that formed early. Before imposing himself as one of the most prominent contestants in the lead.
As the race entered its decisive stages, Arrieta intensified his attacks on the heights. He and Lawrence managed to separate from the rest of the group, forming the lead duo until the last few kilometers. The two riders cooperated to maintain the difference with the main group, ensuring that they competed directly to win the stage.
In the final meters, Arrieta tried to surprise his opponent with an early start. However, Lawrence showed his superiority in final speed, snatching first place shortly before the finish line.
Arrieta also won the Best Fighter Cyclist of the Stage award, in recognition of his offensive performance throughout the race, as well as his podium finish.
