Abu Dhabi, UAE – A research team from New York University Abu Dhabi completed a research study that demonstrated the ability of artificial intelligence to independently rediscover the basic principles of particle physics. This is an achievement that could accelerate future discoveries of the fundamental laws of physics of the universe.
In a study published in the Journal of High Energy Physics – JHEP, scientists at New York University Abu Dhabi showed the ability of some relatively simple artificial intelligence techniques to reach the same links that physicists were not able to reach until after decades of studies. During their development of the theory of the “standard model”, the framework that describes particles and the fundamental forces of the laws of physics.
empirical data
The research team, consisting of Aya Abdelhak, Pellegrino Piantadosi and Fernando Quevedo, used experimental data from the field of molecular science dating back to the 1950s and 1960s. Without prior knowledge of the mathematical tools used at the time, the AI system identified the organizational principles behind dozens of molecules.
This study shows that AI can extrapolate fundamental physical laws directly from data, said Pellegrino Piantadosi, an associate researcher at New York University Abu Dhabi and one of the authors of the paper. Which heralds the possibility of discovering new particles and patterns that humans have not yet noticed.
