Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – The UAE has announced the launch of a pilot phase of the “One-Stop Shop” project for air travelers with the Kingdom of Bahrain. This initiative aims to facilitate travel for citizens of both countries and reduce waiting times at airports. It also seeks to boost tourism and trade. Furthermore, it supports security and economic integration between the two nations.
In the UAE, the project is being implemented by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship and the Customs and Ports Security Authority. In Bahrain, the Ministry of Interior is responsible for implementation. This is in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council and other relevant entities. The first phase is scheduled to be implemented at Zayed International Airport and Bahrain International Airport.
Pre-registration and completion of procedures from the country of departure
The project is based on the principle of completing entry procedures in advance at the departure airport through a fully integrated electronic link. This link includes biometric verification and pre-arrival data exchange. It also includes the integration of passport systems, ports, and smart gates. As a result, travelers from both countries can complete the procedures before departure. This in turn reduces congestion and shortens arrival times.
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security, affirmed that the project represents an innovative model. It reflects the GCC countries’ commitment to facilitating travel through the use of the latest digital technologies. He added that it also enhances the quality of life for travelers. Additionally, it boosts the competitiveness of both countries’ airports regionally and globally.
Supporting economic and security integration
For his part, His Excellency Mohammed Ahmed Al-Kuwaiti, Acting Director General of Ports, explained that the pre-electronic linking ensures data accuracy and streamlined procedures. It does this while maintaining privacy and the highest security standards. He also noted that the initiative represents a first step within a broader vision towards a scalable, smart Gulf travel system.
Etihad Airways confirmed its participation as an active partner in the project. Captain Majid Al Marzouqi explained that the initiative redefines the travel experience between the two countries. Moreover, it enables passengers on the national carrier’s flights to complete entry procedures seamlessly in advance.
The project is a strategic step towards the future of smart mobility in the GCC countries by reducing reliance on traditional check-in counters and promoting the use of e-gates. Furthermore, there are future plans to integrate artificial intelligence and predictive analytics technologies. This will enhance passenger flow management efficiency.
