Abu Dhabi, UAE – A UAE government spokesperson said on Saturday that talks hosted by Abu Dhabi between Russian and Ukrainian delegations focused on key elements of the US-proposed peace framework.
This reflects continued diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the nearly two-year-long conflict.
The spokesperson, in remarks carried by Reuters, explained that the meetings involved direct communication
between officials from both the Russian and Ukrainian sides and were held in a constructive and positive atmosphere.
This allowed for discussions on points of contention and attempts to narrow gaps
on fundamental issues related to a ceasefire and post-ceasefire arrangements.
The talks took place at Al Shati Palace in Abu Dhabi, under Emirati auspices.
UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed the heads of the delegations participating in the trilateral talks.
These talks also included representatives from the United States, as part of support for international efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement.
Discussing sensitive issues
The spokesperson indicated that the discussions addressed a number of sensitive issues,
including general security principles, guarantees of stability, and mechanisms for implementing any potential agreement.
However, the spokesperson did not elaborate further on the outcomes or expected next steps.
These talks come at a time of intensified regional and international diplomatic efforts. This occurs amid US and European pressure to revive a negotiating track that could lead to de-escalation.
Meanwhile, Moscow and Kyiv maintain their respective positions on core demands.
The UAE, which has played an increasingly prominent role in international mediation in recent years, is attempting to provide a neutral platform for dialogue between the conflicting parties.
It is leveraging its balanced relationships with various international powers, including Russia, Ukraine, and the United States.
In a related development, Russian media outlets quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as confirming that Russia remains open to continuing dialogue with the Ukrainian side, should the appropriate conditions be met.
This reflects the continuation of the negotiating process despite its political and military complexities.
