Abu Dhabi, UAE – Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar” and the international company “Octops Energy”, which specializes in the field of energy technology, signed two memorandums of understanding to develop prominent projects in the United Kingdom and Africa.
This was during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which was recently held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC).
The two companies announced that they will work to make the most of the potential of the UK electricity distribution network to operate the next generation of data centers, as the UK faces a major crisis in connecting renewable energy projects to electricity networks.
Solving this problem will take several years. At the same time, the demand for electricity is increasing significantly.
Because data centers need huge amounts of energy, which can take years to save.
Masdar and Octopus offer a solution to this problem by identifying available untapped capacities in the British distribution network and designing smart local energy systems to take advantage of them.
By combining on-site solar power supplies, batteries, and flexible grid connectivity, data centers will be able to get the power they need faster.
Without long delays in network supply.
This technology, supported by the Kraken platform developed by Octopus, will achieve a practical balance between on-site power generation, batteries, and the electricity grid to ensure the continuity of artificial intelligence applications that consume large amounts of energy.
In addition to reducing costs by moving consumption to lower-cost periods.
Under the second MoU, Masdar and Octopus will collaborate to expand the deployment of clean energy solutions across Africa.
By utilizing the continent’s vast solar and wind energy resources to serve users from the commercial and industrial sectors.
This cooperation will enable the deployment of local networks and distributed energy systems that support job opportunities, production, and industrial growth.
This contributes to overcoming one of the biggest obstacles facing African companies, namely the lack of investment in networks, flexibility, and systems integration.
strengthening partnerships
Masdar and Octopus seek to strengthen their partnership by cooperating in other projects that include countries in South Africa and other countries.
Masdar aims to cooperate with Octopus as part of the Power Africa initiative.
Which is part of Global Citizen’s broad global campaign “Expanding Renewable Energy in Africa”.
The initiative aims to stimulate investments worth US$450 million across a variety of clean energy solutions.
It includes electricity grids, distributed assets, and technologies that provide clean energy directly to homes and businesses, and contribute to supporting African economies.
In 2023, Masdar signed a framework agreement with the global Octopus Energy Group, under which Masdar will obtain licenses to use Octopus Energy’s Kraken technology platform to manage its entire portfolio of energy storage battery projects in the UK using smart and flexible methods.
