Stockport, United Kingdom – Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar” announced the start of commercial operation of an energy storage battery systems facility in the Stockport area.
This is the first project to be completed as part of Masdar’s commitment to invest £1 billion in energy storage battery system projects in the UK.
The company will develop two more energy storage battery systems projects in the Cardiff and Chesterfield areas.
The Stockport facility, located on Wilkin Road, has a capacity of 20 MW/40 MWh.
It contributes to providing clean electricity to about 20,000 homes for more than two hours.
Meanwhile, the Chesterfield and Cardiff projects, which will have a total capacity of 150 MW/300 MWh, will contribute to energy storage and provide electricity over the course of a full day to more than 35,000 homes in the United Kingdom.
Construction work on the Stockport project began in May 2024.
Following Masdar’s acquisition of Arlington Energy in 2022, the company committed to investing one billion pounds sterling in a project portfolio for energy storage battery systems in the United Kingdom, with a total capacity of 3 gigawatt hours, as part of its efforts to contribute to creating a qualitative shift in the British energy sector.
The British government aims to implement energy storage projects with a capacity of up to 27 gigawatts by the end of this decade.
This is within the framework of the “Clean Energy 2030” action plan.
Energy storage battery systems contribute to balancing and stabilizing renewable energy supplies.
This is done by providing a flexible energy resource that stores the surplus during periods of low demand and distributes it to the grid during peak times.
This flexibility contributes to enhancing grid stability and energy security, and supports the integration of renewable energy sources into grids.
As well as reducing consumer bills and reducing carbon emissions.
project development
Masdar develops its projects in the field of energy storage batteries in accordance with the highest international standards of safety and security.
It includes advanced fire detection and suppression systems, in addition to providing a 24-hour surveillance camera system and local response capabilities.
Masdar implements projects for energy storage battery systems in the United Kingdom in coordination with local partners.
To ensure a positive impact within local communities and provide tangible economic benefits across the Kingdom.
Masdar’s most prominent projects in the British market include the 1.4 GW East Anglia 3 offshore wind power plant.
It is a joint investment between Masdar and Iberdrola worth 5.2 billion euros.
When operational, it will supply 1.3 million homes with electricity in Britain.
In addition to the 3 GW Dogger Bank South offshore wind power plant, which is being developed in partnership with RWE.
