Abu Dhabi, UAE – UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Lana Nusseibeh affirmed on Thursday that the UAE’s priority at this stage is to achieve an immediate humanitarian truce in Sudan. This is a prelude to reaching a permanent ceasefire and initiating a political transition process leading to an independent civilian government that will end the current power vacuum and division.
During a press conference, Nusseibeh stated that the UAE is conducting ongoing and coordinated consultations with its European partners regarding the escalating conflict in Sudan. She also commended the support provided by the European Parliament and European foreign ministers for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war. She emphasized that this support reflects a growing awareness of the gravity of the regional and humanitarian situation and the necessity of collective action to encourage de-escalation among the warring parties.
She noted that the Quartet’s statement issued last September represented a significant turning point. It laid out a practical roadmap for a comprehensive peace process and outlined a political path to prevent Sudan from descending into chaos and becoming a haven for extremist groups or an arena for regional conflicts. She emphasized that Sudan’s future must be based on strong civilian rule that guarantees security and stability and preserves the country’s unity.
In a related context, Nusseibeh revealed figures on Emirati humanitarian aid to Sudan in recent years. She explained that the UAE has provided nearly $800 million in humanitarian and development assistance. She also mentioned a newly announced $500 million humanitarian fund. According to Nusseibeh, this support makes the UAE the second largest international donor to Sudan after the United States, and underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of civilians and supporting internal stability.
The minister concluded by emphasizing that the Quartet initiative, led by Washington, represents the best opportunity today to achieve a lasting ceasefire. This initiative also opens the door to a genuine political transition that removes the warring parties from the military arena and returns Sudan to a path of development and stability, free from the threats of terrorism and extremist groups.
