Abu Dhabi, UAE – UAE Flag Day is celebrated annually on November 3rd as a national event aimed at strengthening feelings of unity and national belonging among the people of the country. It embodies pride in the national flag as a symbol of sovereignty and identity. This day was declared in 2012 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, to serve as a sign of national cohesion and appreciation for the flag as a symbol of patriotism and pride.
The importance of the day and its history
Flag Day symbolizes strengthening loyalty to the UAE leadership and belonging to the nation. The flag is raised on all government and private buildings and homes as an expression of love and devotion to the homeland.
November 3rd was chosen because it marks the day the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan assumed power, following the death of the founder, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God have mercy on him).
Today also reflects the sanctity of the national flag, which was adopted in 1971. It contains the colors of Arab unity: red, green, white, and black.
