Washington, D.C. – His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, held a high-level meeting in Washington, D.C. The meeting included U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent. This meeting reflects the depth of the strategic partnership between Doha and Washington, and comes amidst the rapid changes taking place in the region and the world in 2026.
Strengthening the defense and strategic partnership
According to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the meeting focused on reviewing the close cooperation between the two countries and ways to develop it further across various fields. Defense partnership topped the agenda. In this context, both sides emphasized the need to strengthen military and security coordination to address current challenges in the Middle East. This serves the shared interests of the two friendly nations and ensures regional stability, particularly given the complex political and military circumstances currently prevailing in the region.
Energy security and freedom of international navigation
On the economic front, developments in global energy markets dominated the discussions. The participants emphasized the paramount importance of creating the conditions necessary for sustainable supplies.
The Qatari side affirmed its commitment to ensuring the uninterrupted flow of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar to global markets. LNG is considered a cornerstone of global energy security.
In this context, the Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to provide adequate guarantees for freedom of navigation. He affirmed that this is an inherent right guaranteed by international law. This is particularly important in vital waterways experiencing increasing tensions.
American praise for Qatar’s role
For his part, US Vice President J.D. Vance praised the advanced level of the Qatari-American partnership. He also commended Qatar’s active and pivotal role as a mediator for peace and a key supporter of regional stability. Vance further noted Doha’s significant contributions to enhancing global energy security. He affirmed the US administration’s commitment to deepening economic and security cooperation with Qatar to confront shared threats. This aims to ensure the smooth flow of global trade through strategic straits.
