Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – In a move described as historic for the future of energy in Africa, the African Union and the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting the development of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. This will contribute to supporting sustainable development plans and provide stable energy sources for African countries.
The agreement focuses on supporting technical capacity building, exchanging expertise, and strengthening regulatory frameworks to ensure the safe and responsible use of nuclear technology. It also supports clean energy projects and scientific research in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and industry.
Experts believe this step represents a strategic shift that could reshape Africa’s energy landscape, especially given the growing demand for electricity and the increasing need for low-emission energy sources, making nuclear energy a promising option for reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
The MoU also reflects an African trend towards achieving energy independence and strengthening international cooperation in advanced technologies. It is expected to attract new investments and develop a peaceful nuclear infrastructure that serves long-term development goals.
