  • Ali Bey al-Kabir Between Reformist Leader and Mamluk Power Struggles

Cairo – Agencies – A number of modern historical studies and books address the life of the Mamluk Prince Ali Bey al-Kabir, who is considered one of the most prominent rulers of Egypt in the late Ottoman era. This prince’s rebellion against the central authority in Istanbul represented a defining moment that changed the course of Egyptian history during the eighteenth century. Furthermore, his political ambitions sought to revive the Mamluk state in a modern and independent manner. Accordingly, the name of Prince Ali Bey al-Kabir became associated with complex power struggles that extended from Cairo to the Levant. In this regard, historians analyze the features of his project through which he sought to change the region’s political map in early 2026.

Rapid Ascent and the Attempt to Establish an Independent Political Entity in Egypt

Books covering his biography present details of his rapid and astonishing ascent within the Mamluk power structure in Cairo. Obviously, Ali Bey al-Kabir quickly transformed from a mere follower into one of the most prominent symbols of rebellion against Ottoman influence in the country. As a result, he made strenuous efforts to establish a political entity entirely independent of Istanbul, relying on strong regional alliances at the time. In addition, the prince focused on strengthening the Egyptian army and reforming the administrative system to ensure the stability of his rule. However, these ambitions faced fierce opposition from internal and external rivals who rejected his departure from the Ottoman mantle.

Flight to the Levant and the Receding of the Mamluk Prince’s Ambitious Project

Historical sources indicate that Prince Ali Bey al-Kabir was forced to flee Egypt for the Levant after the armed conflict with his rivals intensified. Certainly, the decline of his political and military position within Cairo forced him to seek a safe haven to reorganize his ranks. Accordingly, some writings pause at this moment of flight as the endpoint of a sharp political phase in the history of Mamluk Egypt. On the other hand, this retreat caused the receding of his ambitious project aimed at expanding beyond Egyptian borders. In the same context, critics believe that the betrayal of some of his close associates was the primary reason for the collapse of this great political dream.

Ali Bey al-Kabir Between Reformist Leader and Mamluk Power Struggles

Ali Bey al-Kabir remains a controversial figure in Egyptian history books to this day, as opinions are divided over his political legacy. Obviously, there is a group that sees him as a reformist leader ahead of his time, possessing a national vision for independence. In contrast, others consider him a traditional model of the bloody power struggles that characterized the Mamluk state in its final years. As a result, interest in studying his life has increased to understand the roots of the desire for independence from foreign influence. Ultimately, Prince Ali Bey al-Kabir will remain a symbol of an important transitional phase that preceded the arrival of Muhammad Ali Pasha and the founding of modern Egypt.
