Nicosia, Cyprus – Cyprus experienced frequent seismic activity on Wednesday, after a second earthquake struck areas in the west of the island during the evening hours,

following an earlier earthquake that hit the southern coast in the morning.

No casualties or significant material damage have been reported so far.

According to reports from seismic monitoring centers in the Mediterranean,

the second tremor measured approximately 5.5 on the Richter scale.

Its center was near the city of Paphos in western Cyprus, at a depth of

between 10 and 15 kilometers below sea level.

Earthquake aftershocks

The tremor was felt by residents of several cities, including Limassol, Larnaca

and Nicosia, as well as parts of southern Türkiye and Greece.

The Cypriot Geological Survey confirmed that the new earthquake

was the strongest since the beginning of this month.

She noted that specialized teams are closely monitoring the situation.

Monitoring devices subsequently recorded a number of mild aftershocks.

alert

A spokesman for the Cypriot Civil Defence Department explained

that authorities had not received any reports of injuries or serious damage.

He noted that emergency teams are on alert in anticipation of any developments.

Authorities have confirmed that there is no risk of tsunami waves.

The new earthquake comes just hours after a previous 4.3 magnitude

tremor struck the southern coast of Cyprus this morning.

This is a continuation of the increasing seismic activity

in the eastern Mediterranean region.

It is worth noting that Cyprus lies within the active seismic belt

extending from Türkiye to North Africa.

This makes it prone to frequent tremors,

usually mild to moderate in strength.
