Washington, United States – An informed diplomatic source revealed that the United States proposed to the Ukrainian side security guarantees. These guarantees were similar to those provided by NATO but without joining it.
After a call between US President Donald Trump, his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders, the source said, “The American side proposed, as one of the security guarantees for Ukraine, a guarantee similar to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty”.
He also added that “it is assumed that it was agreed upon with Russian President Vladimir Putin” during his summit with Trump yesterday, Friday, in Alaska.

Article 5 of the Atlantic Treaty is the cornerstone of the alliance. It stipulates the principle of collective defense. This means that an attack on any member state is considered an attack on all member states.
Permanent peace instead of a ceasefire
The information came after Trump made clear earlier on Saturday that he had agreed with European leaders, Putin, and Zelensky. The consensus was that a peace deal between Kiev and Moscow was better than a ceasefire between the two sides. Such a ceasefire would not last long.
While the European Union welcomed the efforts made by the US President to end the war, it stressed the need to provide strong guarantees to Kiev. This is in order to defend itself.
He considered in a statement that Ukraine cannot be prevented from joining NATO or the European Union.
Moscow has always stressed that it is better to address the roots of the problem between it and Kiev.
It also stressed more than once that NATO’s expansion in its surroundings poses a threat to its strategic security.
While Trump expressed his understanding of Russian concerns, stressing that his meeting with his Russian counterpart was “wonderful”.
