Rome, Italy – ENGIE Italia announced the signing of a long-term, 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Apple Inc. This agreement aims to accelerate the transition to green energy by developing a portfolio of sustainable projects in southern Italy.

Highlights
  • Multi-source projects with a total capacity of 173 MW
  • Apple’s strategy and Engie’s investments in renewable energy are strengthening.
  • Global growth in green power purchase agreements

This agreement represents a major strategic step in both parties’ efforts to support decarbonization and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources. Eighty percent of the energy produced will be allocated to Apple’s clean energy operations, while the remaining 20 percent will be marketed to cover the needs of approximately 30,000 Italian homes.

Multi-source projects with a total capacity of 173 MW

Under the agreement, Engie will build five renewable energy facilities, distributed as follows:
Two photovoltaic solar farms with a total capacity of 88 megawatts

Two 74 MW wind farms

Facility to re-commission an old 11 MW wind farm

These plants are expected to enter service between 2026 and 2027. They will produce more than 400 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, contributing to a reduction of more than 160,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually—equivalent to planting approximately 16 million trees.

Apple’s strategy and Engie’s investments in renewable energy are strengthening.

This partnership falls within Apple’s strategy to achieve complete carbon neutrality across its supply chain and operations by 2030. It also bolsters Engie’s plan to double its installed capacity in Italy to 1.6 gigawatts by 2030.

Currently, ENGIE has an active investment portfolio in Italy, comprising 773 MW of total capacity (in operation and under construction).

18 photovoltaic solar power plants with a capacity of 250 megawatts

20 wind farms with a total capacity of 474 megawatts

4 battery energy storage facilities with a capacity of 49 megawatts

Official statements: Energy agreements as a strategic lever

Monica Iacono, CEO of ENGIE Italia, said:

“Our partnership with Apple demonstrates our commitment to leading the energy transformation through innovative, large-scale solutions. Power purchase agreements are a strategic tool for decarbonization today, providing economic benefits and stability in a volatile market.”

She added, “It is essential to work on simplifying and standardizing these contracts, and developing mutual guarantee tools that enhance market maturity, making it a fundamental pillar of industrial sustainability.”

Global growth in green power purchase agreements

ENGIE continues to expand its global network of power purchase agreements, signing 4.3 GW of contracts in 2024 alone. The company provides its customers with tailor-made solutions that combine emissions reductions, price stability, and reduced exposure to energy market volatility.

In this context, Italy stands out as a successful model in meeting the growing demand for reliable and sustainable energy solutions. This falls within broader efforts led by ENGIE worldwide to transition to a low-carbon economy.
