Colombia – Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed on Saturday that the United States violated Colombia’s maritime sovereignty. He also noted that it had killed a simple fisherman in the Caribbean. This incident sparked widespread controversy internationally.
Petro’s statements came in the context of a US military campaign targeting drug trafficking networks that flood Colombia with toxins and are accused of killing Americans.
However, the Colombian president strongly criticized these operations. He also attacked the US administration on the X platform (formerly Twitter), saying, “Employees of the US government committed an assassination and violated the sovereignty of our territorial waters.”
Colombian fisherman killed
“Why doesn’t the national newscast pay attention to the killing of a simple Colombian fisherman in Santa Marta by an American missile?” Petro asked angrily. He pointed out that the United States had destroyed a family of fishermen in the city. This city was to host the Latin American-European summit.
The Colombian president added, “The United States is defending Colombian national territory, and it has killed an honorable Colombian worker. Raise the sword of Bolívar,” in a symbolic reference to the liberation leader Simon Bolivar.
The incident Petro is believed to have occurred last September. At that time, US forces launched an attack on a fishing boat in the Caribbean Sea, resulting in the death of the Colombian man, according to local reports.
This statement reflects escalating tensions between Colombia and the United States. There is tension surrounding military operations in Colombian territorial waters. This situation is accompanied by international demands for an investigation into the incident.
